The following how-to-write books are proving invaluable as I work on completing my first novel:
How to Grow a Novel: The Most Common Mistakes Writers Make and How to Overcome Them by Sol Stein
Writing the Breakout Novel by Donald Maass
Writing the Breakout Novel Workbook: Hands-On Help for Making Your Novel Stand Out and Succeed
From the Write Great Fiction series of books put out by Writers' Digest Book:
Plot & Structure: (Techniques and Exercises for Crafting a Plot That Grips REaders From Start to finish) (Write Great Fiction) by James Scott Bell
Write Great Fiction: Characters, Emotion & Viewpoint : (Techniques and exercises for crafting dynamic characters and effective viewpoints) (Write Great Fiction)
I don't consider these books as how-to-write books but rather inspirational writing books. I've reread each of them several times and every time I come away feeling renewed, refreshed and ready to bring that energy to whatever writing project I'm working on at the time.
